Clos La Madeleine, a jewel-like vineyard of just 2.3 hectares, is located on the south-facing plateau and terraces of Saint-Émilion, nestled in the vineyard of Château Bélair-Monange. The estate was acquired by Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix in September 2017.

The Magdelaine sector has been home to the leading wines of Saint-Émilion since vines were first planted here in the 6th century. Clos La Madeleine, a privileged enclave in this propitious hillside, exemplifies the elegance and minerality characteristic of these well-exposed limestone parcels.

The vineyard of Clos La Madeleine, planted on limestone bedrock covered, in some areas, by just 50 cm of clay, is managed with attentive care throughout the year (ploughing, selective cover-cropping, leaf thinning, green harvesting). A manual harvest followed by two thorough sortings ensure that only those grapes which have achieved optimal maturity are selected. Following the alcoholic fermentation in stainless-steel tanks and large oak casks, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation in new French oak barrels. The wine is then aged in oak barrels for 16 to 18 months.

Mr Hubert de Boüard de Laforest acted as consulting oenologist for Clos La Madeleine from 2006 until the 2016 harvest. The Ets. Jean-Pierre Moueix technical teams took over full management of the property following the acquisition.

The wines of Clos La Madeleine, charming, elegant, with a remarkable mineral streak, embody the distinction of this noble terroir.

Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix, or JP Moueix, is a Bordeaux négociant house founded by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937, situated on the Quai du Priourat in Libourne, in the Bordeaux wine region of France. While dealing in wholesale distribution of numerous Right Bank wines, the company also acts as a bulk grape merchant, operates exclusive distribution for select châteaux, and manages its own portfolio of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion estates. The company has 120 employees.

Since Jean-Pierre Moueix began investing in properties of the region in the early 1950s, the company grew to become highly influential in the French wine market, and was instrumental in the rise of the reputation of the Pomerol region. The early purchase of the Saint-Émilion estate Château Magdelaine in 1952 and the acquisitions of Pomerol La Fleur-Pétrus in 1950 and châteaux Trotanoy, Lagrange in 1953, while the gradual acquisition of Pétrus was begun in 1961, followed by the assuming the farming of Château Latour à Pomerol in 1962. In 1930 his father, Jean Moueix, had already bought the Saint-Émilion property, Château Fonroque. Later additions to the Moueix portfolio include the Napa valley property Dominus Estate, the Pomerol châteaux Hosanna and Providence, and complete ownership of the Saint-Émilion estate Château Belair then renamed Chateau Bélair-Monange.

Jean-Pierre Moueix retired in 1978 and died in 2003. In 1991 his son Christian Moueix became president of JP Moueix, while the grandson Edouard Moueix in the company since 2003 is today Deputy General Manager .

We had the pleasure to meet Christian Moueix in an extraordinary vertical tasting of La Fleur-Pétrus organized by WSET Greece. One word is engraved in my mind after that session: “Balance”.
